So we got this big guy last week, and I have to tell you, I have experienced a complete lifestyle change-I'm outside more, I'm walking more, I'm noticing all the things in my home that can be chewed...it's interesting, to say the least. But my first observation about this new creature in my midst is the truth of a Buddhist philosophy about meditation. "The mind is like a puppy..."
This statement is in reference to what it is like for us to sit and meditate-not focusing on anything but our breath. And, as someone who meditates daily and utilizes the principles of mindfulness in practice with my clients, I always found this statement kind of charming and whimsical...
Until I got the puppy. My 'puppy mind' mirrors my puppy dog exactly! They both love exercise and treats, long walks, and lots of pets and affection. Try to get either to sit still for a moment and you'll find that it's very VERY easy to get distracted! The puppy mind is all over the place, no manners, jumping up on people, sniffing trees, and in general, unable to pay attention!
Lo and behold, a liver treat-and my puppy is suddenly alert and ready to focus on my commands. I believe our mind can be similar with just a little direction...try telling your mind to "sit" and "stay", and watch yourself begin to be mindful. As you focus on your breathing, remember the other aspect of puppy mind-it loves to learn like a great big sponge. Everything is new and wondrous, and an opportunity for growth. And, as my partner says, "for puppies, everything is "Oh, my favorite"!
So I am embracing puppy mind, and my puppy. Remember to focus on your breath and pay attention, and the rewards will an obedient, loving friend for life. When the mind wanders off to play in an open field, redirect it back to the breath. Embrace your puppy mind.
