"I'm thankful for..."

A long standing Thanksgiving tradition in my family (and most others I suppose), is to go 'round the table, and say what you've been thankful for. This is perhaps one of my favorite parts of T-day (besides the Turkey leg), so it got me thinking....why not do this everyday?

So, waaaayyyy back last November, I began a small but thoughtful "gratitude list". I cannot recommend this exercise enough! I would simply write two or three things down as they came to me. When it was a good day, it was easy. When it was a bad day, it really made me ponder life, and find joy in something-even if it was just a good song on the radio or my dog.

The list keeps me focused and helps me to remember that usually, things aren't so bad. It's fun to look back on the list, and relish these thankful bits. Taking time out to appreciate these things helps you to naturally be mindful of them in your everyday life.

Get a small portable notebook, and start listing things you are thankful for today. Don't look for the big overarching ones-see if you can notice a small detail that makes you smile.

In honor of Turkey Day, here are some of my favorites from my personal list:

  • Melancholy rain
  • Getting up before anyone else
  • Getting lost with my dog
  • The salad bar at Russo's
  • Making actual food with my oven & stove
  • Not having any time to watch TV
  • Frothy frozen coffee drinks
  • The way my cat crawls under the covers with me

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
