Movie Review Time!!!
When I saw this movie, I was kind of blown away, because the main character, Mavis, is having a late-in-life Quarter Life Crisis! Sure, she's not 25, she's 37-but she's certainly acting 25! In many ways, Mavis is like so many women I see....maybe drinking too much, feeling disconnected, stuck idealizing a life that "could have been", and literally pulling out her own hair.
I thought this was such a interesting, realistic portrayal (ok, maybe a little exaggerated) of a woman lost...her career is ending, her marriage has ended...and maybe she's clinging a little to closely to what feels familiar. An old high school boyfriend and a life that wasn't.
So Spoilers Alert: Mavis is also clearly grieving the loss of a pregnancy that she miscarried at age 19, with this high school boyfriend. I see this A LOT in my private practice. Ladies, let me be clear. When we don't deal with these things emotionally at 19, they will reappear later in life to make friends with us once again. Good news though-you can heal from stuff like this, and sometimes just a little guidance from a professional is necessary.
Do yourself a favor, and invest in some therapy now! I imagine a nice ending for Mavis, that she goes back to her big city life, and calls a therapist to hook herself up with some reality based emotional health!!! You go girl!
If you're thinking about making an appointment, email me! We'll figure out a plan for you, before you, like Mavis, try to make out with your high school ex-boyfriend. This is one area of life where I can't encourage recycling.
