Disney Disappoints by Joining the "Fight Against Obesity"

Really, Disney?  As many of you know, I'm a Disney nut.  I've been there a bunch, and all in my adult life.  I love the escape, the fantasy, the magic....but hearing this just burst my bubble!

Apparently, Disney has a new exhibit, partnered with a VERY well known insurance company over at Epcot, which depicts "unhealthy habits" in the form of overweight cartoon characters, named (remote) Control Freak, Snacker, and Sweet Tooth.  You shoot them with broccoli.  Because we all know that's what helps when you're overweight.

I'm not kidding, your good friends "Calli Stenics" and, my personal favorite, "Will Power" help you. You can read an article describing the exhibit here.  Yes, again, we all know how amazing Will Power has saved us all against the certain doom of additional pounds.  Riiiiggghhht.

I find this pretty offensive, since I am a curvy lady, and feel that telling our children that fat people are somehow "bad" due to their "habits" only reinforces weird ideals that we should all be one size and shames folks into fitting into some weird mold...and reinforces that certain foods are "good" and certain foods are "bad".  NOOO!!  Many of you know that I take a compassionate view on how we can change our relationship to food, and this certainly is not in line with that....

I believe foods are neutral, and I believe in health at every size.  Here's more about that here.

Thank you BEDA, for alerting me to this issue.

Here's what you can do to tell Disney we hate this, and maybe they should be a little more sensitive to the Health At Every Size Movement, and find a way to educate children that is meaningful and appropriate:

  • Post this call to action on Facebook and Twitter
  • Reach out to professional organizations and others to ask them to join with us
  • Reach out to reporters and news organizations you may have contacts within
